Shelby Monuments was born at Barkdull Funeral Home in Shelby in the fall of 2006 when Bill Neal went to work for his wife, Lesli.

Lesli, a funeral director, had met with a family and sold a monument and said that she wished there was a way to do more of that for their clients. Bill suggested that, with his background in computer-aided drafting, perhaps that was something he could do.

Following training on the various types and materials of monuments that were available, Bill began to sell them as a sideline in addition to his other duties at the funeral home.

By 2011, the amount of time spent on monuments versus other duties was becoming harder and harder for Bill to manage so he began to make plans to open a store to dedicate his full attention to monuments. In July of 2012, he made the jump and started his own store.
